How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene?
Everyone wants to flash a great smile – the primary and the most evident reason for keeping our teeth shining and healthy. Apart from this, a good set of teeth can keep you healthy too, as oral hygiene is linked to heart disease, diabetes and complications related to pregnancy. Tooth loss can also make it hard to digest food, especially those that need to be chewed properly.
Here is how you can maintain a beautiful set of teeth:
- Brushing twice is best:
Most people brush their teeth once a day, that too right after getting up in the morning. Actually, we should not brush once but twice a day that too after having breakfast and before going to bed, after we are done with eating and drinking for the day. Additionally, position the bristles at a 45 degree angle near the gum line. Both gum line and tooth surface must be in contact with the bristles. Brush the outer surfaces with a back and forth, up and down motion. To clean the inside surface of the teeth and gums, place the brush at 45 degrees and repeat the strokes in the same way. Lastly, gently brush the surface of your tongue and roof of your mouth. - Flossing once every day:
Flossing can reach where brushing cannot – between the teeth where in addition to food particles, other detrimental substances may also be stuck. Break off about 18 inches of floss, wind it around the middle fingers of each hand, now, holding the floss tightly between thumb and forefinger guide the floss between each teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. As the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth. Bring the floss back toward the contact point between the teeth, moving the floss up or down the other side. Then, hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Continue by gently moving the floss away from the gum with an up and down motion. Repeat the same for every tooth. - Avoid Tobacco:
In India, in addition to smoking, people also chew tobacco which is extremely harmful for the teeth. Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco and do a big favor to your teeth. - Rinse daily:
Consult your dentist about which mouthwash to rinse with, as some contain only fluoride and others kill bacteria. After rinsing, avoid eating or drinking for the next 20 to 30 minutes. - Chew gum:
After having your food, pop in a sugar-free gum sweetened with Xylitol and chew for a minimum of 20 minutes. Xylitol will kill the cavity-causing bacteria and produce saliva which helps to reduce acidity.
